Our Work
Nuclear
Bruce Power Major Component Replacement Project
United is providing a comprehensive set of large component replacement and maintenance and modification services. United’s SGRT joint venture with Framatome and Aecon is replacing the steam generators at Bruce units 3-8. United’s Shoreline Power joint venture with AtkinsRéalis and Aecon is executing fuel channel and feeder replacement (FCFR) projects on the Bruce units 3-8 CANDU reactors.
DTE Fermi Unit 2 Alliance
United’s work history at Fermi dates back to an emergency project on Christmas Day in 1994 that grew into a long-term alliance relationship performing engineering and implementation work. United has supported more than 20 refueling outages and multiple engineering design change packages, studies and analyses, and calculation recalculations. An innovative on-site/off-site workshare program delivers high-quality, affordable services to DTE.
TVA Watts Bar Unit 2 Steam Generator Replacement
United’s Steam Generating Team (SGT) joint venture with Framatome performed project management, planning, engineering, and construction services to replace four steam generators at Watts Bar Unit 2. The 67-foot, 360-ton steam generators were removed and replaced through temporary openings in the reactor building dome, containment, and steam generator enclosures.
Advanced Clean Technology ARC-100 SMR
United has been supporting the development of the ARC-100 technology since 2017. In Canada, United provides architecture and engineering services, including Levelized Cost of Energy (LCOE) estimate, conceptual design of BOP systems, constructability/modularization assessment, preliminary construction schedule and cost estimate, and preliminary structural design of the reactor building. As a part of the Advanced Reactor Conception-20 Department of Energy project in the US, United is providing conceptual design and preliminary design of an advanced sodium reactor facility.
Duke Energy Fleetwide EOC
United has provided comprehensive nuclear engineering services fleetwide to Duke Energy under master services agreements and engineer of choice (EOC) alliance relationships since 2012. The services have included a broad array of engineering, design, and engineering change packages, including turbine controls upgrades, Fukushima evaluations and recommendations, a security information and event management project and other digital I&C projects supported by United’s Nuclear Digital I&C Design Center in Charlotte, N.C. United has a long history with Duke Energy dating back to the early 1970s as the engineer of record on four nuclear units.
Power Generation
Alliant Riverside New Generation
United provided comprehensive EPC services for the new construction of a 650 MW combined cycle plant that includes an integrated 2 MW solar PV installation to generate the plant’s internal power and be part of the plant’s auxiliary power system. The project expanded an existing Alliant complex and, as part of the company’s modernization plan, enabled the retirement of coal-burning plants near retirement. It also delivered significant environmental and economic benefits to the community.
TVA Cumberland Wastewater Treatment
United provided EPC and startup services for a physical-chemical wastewater treatment system as well as the required utilities, support systems and structures for the 2,600 MW Cumberland Fossil Plant. The system complies with 2020 EPA effluent limitation guidelines (ELGs) and is one of the largest FGD wastewater treatment systems in the world based on its 4,400 GPM capacity.
TVA Johnsonville Cogeneration
United provided EPC services for the conversion of a combustion turbine to a heat recovery cogeneration cycle to produce process steam for an adjacent chemical plant at TVA’s Johnsonville plant. Prior to the cogeneration project, steam for the chemical plant was produced by 10 coal-fired units, which were scheduled to be shut down. The addition of an HRSG to an existing combustion turbine at the plant enabled TVA to continue to provide steam to its industrial customers.
APS Four Corners SCR
United provided engineering, procurement, and construction management to design and build Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) retrofits on Units 4 and 5. The installed SCR units are the tallest in North America. As part of the scope, two (2) new 60 ft. diameter air rotary air pre-heaters and one (1) hydrated lime storage and injection system were installed for each unit, as well as a common urea to ammonia generation facility to supply ammonia vapor to both units. The project was completed with a superior safety record, ahead of schedule, and within budget.
We Energies South Oak Creek SCR and FGD
United provided engineering, procurement, and construction services to install Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) systems for NOx removal and Wet Limestone Forced Oxidation Flue Gas Desulfurization (FGD) systems for SO2 removal on four coal-powered units. Over one mile of flue-gas ductwork weighing more than 7,500 tons was installed to connect the four generating units to the two SCR and two FGD systems. The project was completed with 2.68+ million work hours without a lost time incident.
John L Featherstone Geothermal Facility
United was the Owner’s on-site construction manager for this 49 MW high-temperature geothermal power generation facility, which was built in approximately 21 months. It employs well-established geothermal power plant technologies, such as advanced steam flash and innovative brine handling, to produce electricity from the naturally occurring geothermal brine stored in reservoirs thousands of feet beneath the earth’s surface. The plant’s design also ensures efficient water use, a key consideration for a project located in the southwestern U.S. An integrated team using proven technology and strong project management ensured the success of the project.
Distributed Energy Resources
SCE Peaker Plant Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)
United provided project management, construction management, and Owner’s Engineer services for the installation of two enhanced gas turbine retrofit kits at the Center Peaker Generating Station in Norwalk, CA and the Grapeland Peaker Generating Station in Rancho Cucamonga, CA. The upgrades, including a 10 MW BESS, enable the plants to immediately respond to the grid’s needs until the quick-start, fast-ramping 50 MW LM 6000 gas turbines reach production output.
PSE&G Solar4All Program
United provided engineering consulting and program management services to PSE&G’s Solar4All Program, which installed individual solar panels on 200,000 utility poles in New Jersey’s six largest cities and 300 suburban and rural communities as well as ground and roof-mounted arrays for a total distributed generation of 40 MW. The project won Powergrid International Magazine’s Renewable Grid Integration Project of the Year.
Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage Project
United provided engineering and design services for the 500-ton-per-day CO2 Removal Demonstration Project at Southern Company’s Plant Barry. The program was conducted by an alliance that included Southern Energy, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the U.S. DOE, and the Electric Power Research Institute. United’s design services included foundations, structural steel, piping, electrical, and instrumentation and controls.
